top 10 mistakes people make when choosing skin care

Making the decision to take care of your skin or ramp up your current skin care regimen is a big one. Determining what products to buy can be an even bigger decision. But before you stress, consider these 10 mistakes that are commonly made so you won’t make them yourself:


1)  Read the label – if you know what your skin needs you are well ahead of the curve. If you don’t know, you will want to read the label to determine which active ingredients are used in the product you are considering. If the active ingredient isn’t among the top three in the list, then they won’t be effective for your skin.


2)  Don’t choose too many products – the process of creating a skin care regimen can be overwhelming but you really only need a few items to get started: cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer, sunscreen. As your skin ages or you being to see wrinkles, you may want to add and eye cream.


3)  Skip products that multi-task – When skin care products serve more than one purpose, 2 things generally happen. 1 – key active ingredients are compromised and thus not as effective, 2 – multi-tasking products can cause skin irritation.


4)  Don’t forget about sleep, diet and stress – how much you sleep, what you eat and daily stress levels can have an enormous impact on your skin. Be sure to consider this when looking for results from the products you choose.


5)  Order of application – be sure to apply your skin care products by those that are thinnest to those that are thickest. For instance, you would want to apply your anti-oxidant or your concentrate first, then your cream and finally your eye cream.


6)  Give products time to work – we live in the age of instant gratification. We want it all and we want it now. But where skin care is concerned, it’s best to take the wait and see approach. Give your products time to make a positive difference in your skin. In most cases, you should start to see a difference after 4 weeks. On the other had, if you have been using a product for several weeks and don’t see any change for the better, it may not be the right product for you.


7)  Choosing products that aren’t appropriate for your skin type – be sure to look for products that target your age group (your actual age and not the one you tell people). If you are using something that’s meant to be for someone half your age, chances are you won’t get a lot of great results. The alternate is true for products meant for skin much older.


8)  Over stimulation of the skin – Some products may be too much for your skin type. Specifically, if your skin leans towards the sensitive side, applying aggressive products or any product too aggressively can over stimulate the skin and cause more damage than good. Be careful with your face, it’s the only one you’ve got.


9)  Don’t skip the cleanser – it is imperative that you cleanse your skin at least every night and for some, in the morning as well. If you have dry skin, you can skip the morning cleanse. Failing to remove the day’s debris can clog pores, exacerbate acne and literally age you.


10)  Over or under exfoliating – As you age it’s important to regularly exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells and support new cell growth. Choose an exfoliator that’s appropriate for your skin and promise yourself to use it regularly (as directed). More is not more when it comes to exfoliating. You can over do it by being too aggressive during application or by applying too often. It’s best to start slow and work your way up.
