Whether you know it or not, personal values and belief systems have a tremendous impact on our health. No matter what we read, watch, listen to or how we were raised, our own personal beliefs are our own and no one else’s. That said, it’s important to recognize that the choices we make, that ultimately support our beliefs, can literally make or break the possibility of having a healthy lifestyle. Here are some damaging beliefs that could hold you back from living a healthy, happy life:

 

1)  My attitude doesn’t matter. You have probably heard it before; attitude is everything. But did you know that your attitude can actually effect your health? Studies have shown that persons with an overall negative outlook are less likely to live as long as persons who approach life with a positive healthy attitude. 2)  My diet has no impact on my mental health. This is far from true. Your diet absolutely effects your mental health, your mood and your energy level, not to mention the impact it has on your physical health. Making good food choices can be tricky to navigate since it seems the “rules” to do so are ever-changing. But according to everydayHealth.com: “An unhealthy diet high in sugar and fat may be linked to poor mental health.”

 

3)  My outside stresses are not effecting my health. Stress, no matter the source, can and will negatively impact your overall health. Situational health is not necessarily as impactful to longterm health but shouldn’t be overlooked. Situational stress is caused by a trauma or a life change such as a move or a new job. This stress is generally temporary and does not have the long term impact that repetitive job stress or family pressures can. According to the Mayoclinic, “Stress that's left unchecked can contribute to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.” 

 

4)  My relationships do not impact my well being. There will always be persons or relationships in life that are difficult to deal with but we must find a healthy outlet. Exercise such as yoga or walking can help defer some of the negativity we may be experiencing. Talking with someone trustworthy or a counselor can help too. But know that some relationships will always be toxic and if you cannot find a healthy outlet, removal from the relationship may be your only choice. Your health is not something that you can compromise.  

 

5)  My physical appearance does not impact my health. How you look, absolutely has an impact on how you feel. If you are not happy with your appearance in any way, you owe it to yourself to find a solution. Maybe it’s as simple as some new clothes or it requires a bigger commitment such as a weight loss or wellness program. Only you can decide what will make you happy when you look in the mirror. What you need to know about wellness

In our recent blog “What’s Holding Back the Wellness Industry,” we talked about the true meaning of wellness as a positive approach to living and the integration of it into several aspects of our lives. But not all advice on wellness is accurate and not all companies have your best interests at heart when they are trying to “sell” you on wellness. We have sifted through some of the most popular advice cliché’s and have found some tips that you can actually trust when beginning your journey to wellness.

 

1)  Cliché’ - You need a wellness professional  to begin:

When you decide that you want to learn about wellness one of the first places you will likely turn will be the internet. Much of what you will read will focus on the need for you to go to a wellness or holistic professional. While this may be something you will want to eventually do, it is not a necessity. There are so many great online resources for you to learn about wellness on your own such as:

 

 

 

 


 

2)  Cliché - It’s All or Nothing:

Some believe that wellness is an all or nothing approach. If you are going to to do it, you have to do it in all aspects of your life or it won’t be effective. Not true. If you feel you need to incorporate wellness in only certain aspects of your life such as spiritual or emotional, this is perfectly fine. Wellness means different things to different people; do what works for you and recognize that it’s a process that’s always evolving. 

 

3) Cliché’ – You need to stock up on supplements:

When you are just learning about wellness, supplements are a lot of what you will hear about. There are supplements for everything from hair loss to energy enhancers. Simply spending a few minutes every day in quiet may make all the difference.

 

5) Cliche'True wellness requires a financial investment:

While it’s true that you can spend a lot of money on holistic care, supplements and detoxing, these are not what wellness is all about. Many spas and resorts have treatments meant to detox and purify the body and mind and they can be truly wonderful. But you don’t necessarily have to partake in these types of services to be well. True wellness embodies the mind, body and the sprit and there are so many things you can do at home to begin the process. Eating well, sleeping well, and taking time for yourself are all components of wellness and they are a great place to start. Spend time thinking about where you need to make changes.
