Why Dieting Doesn't Work

If you have ever been unhappy with your weight and have tried to diet, this statement may come as a surprise: Dieting Doesn’t Work. You may already know this in your subconscious or maybe you still believe that it works, but the reality is that it doesn’t. The real question is why. Here are a few reasons:


1)    Your diet is too Strict: When you deprive yourself while dieting, even if you do lose weight, the chances are good that you will binge once you return to your normal eating habits and gain some or even all of the weight back.


2)    Your diet is unhealthy: Depriving yourself of too many calories is not only unhealthy, it is also counter productive. Consuming fewer than the number of calories that your body needs will put you in “starvation mode.” Your body will then hold on to it’s weight and instead of losing weight you will lose muscle. Make sure you are taking in enough calories to keep a healthy metabolism.


3)    Your diet is too hard: We all know that diets are no fun. And deprivation can make us irritable and feisty thus limiting our success as we “fall off the wagon” again and again. A proper eating plan should not deprive you of everything that you love. But you will need to modify and limit yourself to smaller portions of the goodies. Consider modifying. Eat what you love but eat less and focus the majority of you diet on the good stuff (veggies and fruits).



So if it’s true that dieting doesn’t work. What does? According to mindful eating is the answer. Although it may sound easy enough, it takes practice. “Mindfulness helps us better understand how full we are and how many calories we have consumed.” Spending a few minutes of quiet before reaching for the potato chips may be a great first step to eating less. And listening to your body’s cues helps too. This requires shutting down the phone, email and TV when you are eating so that you can concentrate on how you are actually feeling. No one likes to feel hungry but if you eat until you are no longer hungry instead of eating until you are full you will consume far fewer calories per day and this will certainly help you achieve your optimum weight.  And believe it or not, your body and your metabolism have more of an effect on your weight maintenance than just willpower according to the Huffington post, so don’t be so hard on yourself.

Before You Diet Do These 3 Things

Beginning a diet can be everything from exciting to scary. The thought of how you will look and feel when you lose weight can be motivating and invigorating. But deciding what diet, what path, and how to begin can be overwhelming.


As lucrative as the diet industry has become, its interesting to note that there's been an overall shift in the traditional diet revolution. The emphasis now is from weight loss to overall health. The general attitude is that the health and well being trumps the number on the scale. And true beauty is not found in the number on the scale. Finally!

With this known, there are a few things you should think about before you begin your diet:


1) Determine your true goal. Are you all about losing weight, or are you striving to improve your overall health? Obviously, the two go hand and hand. But your intentions will have a direct impact on how you go about losing weight so make a firm decision before getting started.


2) Determine your timing. How fast do you want to lose? You already know that gimmicky diets can be successful in the short term but weight loss is difficult to maintain. Why? Because the diet itself is so restrictive that it’s not reasonable to live with long term. Challenge yourself to lose a portion of your overall goal by a reasonable date and then repeat. The slower you lose the longer the weight stays off.


3) Determine your plan. Are you going it alone or will you have better results with a formal plan? Many nationally recognized weight loss plans offer support and coaching. This accountability might be just what you need to stay committed. If you think you can go it alone, give it a try but be open to coaching if you aren’t making progress.

Myths about skin care

Most skin care articles and social media posts are likely rich with good information and tips about how to care for your skin and protect it as you age. The ability to access such information is a great benefit to anyone interested in looking their best and caring for their skin.  But what if the information you read isn’t true? What if the tips that you read about are not good for you or for your skin? This is what your esthetician does NOT want you to know about. Following poor skin care advice can not only irritate your skin, it can have long term effects on it, some of which can be irreversible.


To clear up any conflicting information you may have read, here are the top 5 myths about skincare debunked:


1)  Myth: The Higher the SPF in my sunscreen, the more protection I am getting.

Truth: This is a common misconception. In fact, the SPF rating can give a false sense of security.  According to Skin Inc. Magazine, “an SPF of 50 is only marginally more protective than an SPF of 15.” Instead of looking at the number, look for a broad spectrum sunscreen with protection from UVA and UVB rays and active ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Make sure these actives are among the first 3 ingredients on the bottle so you know they are the most concentrated and wear sunscreen even on cloudy days.


2)  Myth:  You must cleanse your face morning and night.  

Truth: Cleansing the skin in the morning is not necessarily needed (unless you have acne prone skin).  In fact, cleansing twice a day can actually dry the skin. The truth is if you cleanse well at night and apply a good moisturizer, you will wake up with some moisture and oil on the skin in the morning that provides a great barrier of protection throughout the day. So skip the morning cleanse and apply your daily skin care products (including suncreen) before going outdoors.


3)  Myth: Eating Greasy food can cause breakouts.

Truth:  Science doesn’t support this one. Although eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is recommended, there’s no actual proof that the pizza you ate last night will lead to a breakout today. Pimples are caused by bacteria and skin cells and  often linked to hormones…not your diet. Still, limiting the amount of high calorie greasy food is always recommended for good health and will help to keep your skin looking radiant.


4)  Myth: Good Skincare can erase signs of aging.

Truth: While good skincare certainly helps maintain the youthful appearance of your skin, there are other contributing factors such as nutrition and good circulation. If your arteries for example, are not working properly, the end result will be a dull dry complexion.  If you suspect you may have a similar problem, seek help from your healthcare provider to normalize blood pressure and prevent permanent damage to your health and to your skin.


5) Myth: There’s no difference between over the counter skin care products and medical grade professional products.
