It’s Time to Man Up

Nov 16, 2017 11:33:08 AM

Skin care is talked about everywhere, all the time, usually in reference to women. But men have skin care concerns too. Here are the top five skin concerns for men and how they can be helped.

men's Skin Care

1)  Broken Capillaries – According to Dermatology Review, broken capillaries “are tiny and delicate veins just under the skin that are responsible for the blood circulation in the face. When the walls of these veins narrow and widen suddenly, breakage may occur. Some of these ruptured blood vessels cannot repair themselves or go back to their normal thickness without some kind of treatment. Spider veins can be found around the nose, cheeks and mouth, on the neck, as well as the upper chest and legs.” Be careful not to scrub too vigorously or the condition can worsen. Also consider a cleanser with salicylic acid in it to keep dead skin cells from building up.

2)  Large Pores – Perhaps the most common complaint from men is pore size, especially around the nose. Cleansing daily with help reduce the build up of dead skin cells that commonly cause large pores. Cleansing will help with existing break outs too.

3)  Black Heads – According to Healthline, “Blackheads form when a clog or plug develops in the opening of hair follicles in your skin. Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil. This oil, called sebum, helps keep your skin soft. Dead skin cells and oils collect in the opening to the skin follicle, producing a bump called a comedo. If the skin over the bump stays closed, the bump is called a whitehead. When the skin over the bump opens, exposure to the air causes it to look black and a blackhead forms.” Similar to the fix for large pores, consider a daily cleanser, to remove skin toxins and control sebum.

4)  Sensitive Skin from Shaving - Daily shaving can create sensitve irritated skin. Thalgomen After Shave Balm formula is instantly absorbed and its soothing and repairing active ingredients effectively ease skin irritations caused by shaving. The skin feels comfortable and supple with a pleasant feeling of lasting freshness.

5)  Aging – General sagging and lifeless looking skin happens to men just as much as women but there are products which truly do help fight the signs of intrinsic aging. Thalgo Men Regenrating Cream  helps to preserve youthful, energized skin while combatting signs of aging. The skin is visibly smoother, wrinkles are reduced; the signs of aging and fatigue fade rapidly.

what would you go to get rid of your acne

There is nothing like waking up to a large blemish on the day of an important life event. You didn’t see it coming, there’s no specific reason why it’s there. Yet there it is. Front and center, on your big day. What can you do? There are actually many methods for quickly getting rid of acne. Some are safer and more effective than others and some are down right strange. Here are 11 things people are willing to do to get rid of acne and many are in your medicine cabinet right now:

1)  Toothpaste – This trick has been around forever so you may already be familiar. Dab a bit of toothpaste onto the pimple and leave it for about 10 minutes. It will dry the area immediately and reduce swelling. If you have sensitive skin be sure to apply only where the pimple is, as ingredients can cause red circles where its applied so use with caution.

2)  Tea Tree Oil – There are so many uses for tea tree oil and acne treatment is one of them. Be sure to perform a patch test before using it, as it can be irritating for some people. Check out livestrong.com for specific application and patch test instructions.

3)  Eye Drops – They get the red out right? Well they do the same for the skin. Just dab sparingly onto the blemish and watch the red disappear.

4)  Ice – It seems obvious but it really will help with swelling. Cleanse the skin first with a hot cloth and then apply ice wrapped in a paper towel or napkin for 10-15 minutes and the swelling will begin to disappear.

5)  Apples– According to facingacne.com, “One approach to dealing with allergies that trigger acne outbreaks on the skin is to incorporate a natural antihistamine, quercetin, into your diet.”

6)  Aloe – A long time skin soother, aloe can help calm an especially irritated pimple.  Simple dab some on with a Q-Tip.

7)  Hydrogen Peroxide – Not new to the arsenal, hydrogen peroxide is a great way to disinfect the skin but it can be irritating too so use sparingly and spot treat only the affected areas with a Q-tip or clean finger.

8)  Steam – Steaming the skin can be a great way to extract pimples safely. So if you need to extract, try steaming over a pot of hot before you extract. It will open the pores of the skin allowing extractions more easily and causing less trauma to the skin. Be sure to stay a safe distance away from the pot, to protect from burns.

9)  Rubbing Alcohol – A great way to de-fat the skin, rubbing alcohol will remove leftover impurities and will dry the oils in the skin that can be causing the blemishes. Like some of the other remedies, it should be used sparingly as it can also dry the skin.

10)  Cortisone – If all of the above have not worked or sound like too much work, contact your dermatologist. Ask for a same day appointment for a cortisone shot. It’s not painful, and works like a charm, almost immediately.

Maybe you found a solution among the suggestions listed, or maybe you have found your own. Either way, the key to clear skin is to making sure you are following a daily skin care regimen which includes a good cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturizer. Look for products that actually help reduce sebum production. Sebum is the oily (sometimes waxy) substance made by your sebaceous glands. The skin needs it to function and it acts as a barrier protecting the it, but too much can cause acne.

For years, Thalgo Marine Skin Care has been researching the positive effects of algae on the skin and have formulated some amazing products that effectively treat acne and help control the production of acne-causing sebum.

Thalgo Imperfection Corrector:  an SOS treatment for healthier-looking skin in record time. Rich in repairing Hyaluronic Acid, this gel helps clear bacterial hotspots. Imperfection Corrector promotes the disappearance of imperfections in just a few days. Co- Fucus Spiralis and Tetraselmis chui – help regulate production of sebum, reduce shine and the appearance of enlarged pores; help prevent bacterial spread

ntains

Thalgo Intense Regulating Concentrate: Rebalances all combination skin types in just seven days. Thalgo Intense Regulating Concentrate is a powerful intensive treatment product that helps moderate seborrhea, restore the quality of sebum, reduce skin thickness and unclog pores. In just seven days, the skin is purified and less prone to oiliness.

Thalgo MCeutic Normalizer Cream – Serum: Thalgo MCEUTIC Normalizer Cream-Serum is a very powerful serum that fundamentally rebalances the quality of the skin. Highly concentrated in Neo-Skin technology and combined with Marine Mesolift for optimal penetration, Normalizer Cream-Serum targets physiological imbalances to cleanse the skin, significantly refine the skin’s texture, tighten pores, and effectively reduce even the most severe imperfections. Visibly cleaner and smoother to the touch, the skin’s purity and balance are restored.

Top Skin Care Trends for 2017

Jan 26, 2017 8:47:25 AM

skin care trends

A lot can change in a year, and 2016 ushered in some trends that made quite the impact. Some of them will top the trend list again for 2017 and a few we may not see again for quite some time. Here’s a peak at our top skin care trends for 2017:

1)    You Are What You Eat:

This trend began making its way into the skin care faves the latter half of last year and we think its going to stick around for quite some time. The concept that diet can impact skin isn’t rocket science. Doctors have been telling us that our diet impacts our overall health for years. But the focus on foods rich in probiotics, and drinkable collagen and hyaluronic acid supplements have certainly turned some heads. The basic motto is: good skin comes from within. We can protect and enhance the skin topically but eating well, taking probiotics and drinking collagen help to build collagen and elastin from the inside and are more easily assimilated. And let’s not forget that they help to strengthen the skin’s barrier function. Check out Thalgo’s Collagen 5000 drink, which contains 5,000 mg of marine collagen and provides comprehensive wrinkle correction and hydration.

2)Facial Masks:

Facial masks have been around for centuries, literally since Cleopatra. But for the last few years they have really made a come back. According to American Spa Magazine, “The market value of facial masks is estimated to reach more than $7.4 billion in 2020 alone.” This is likely because they offer instant gratification, are highly effective and can be added to just about any spa service. For these reasons alone, we think masks will reign in the top trends for quite some time. Want to try a mask at home? Thalgo’s new MCeutic Essential Regenerating Mask speeds up the optimum regeneration of the skin and helps it to regain vitality and radiance. It’s also deeply hydrating and perfect for the winter months too.

3)    At Home Skin Care Devices

At home devices are not new, but they have improved significantly over the last few years making them a popular buy. Skin care brushes for cleansing are probably at the top of the list. We like how well they clean the skin but be careful not to use ANY pressure when you are using them. Too much pressure can over-exfoliate and cause long term damage and thinning of the skin. At home LED devices are going to remain popular this year and work if you are diligent and patient. They are effective for the treatment of redness and acne but are not nearly as strong as those used by estheticians, so patience and diligence are the key. Unless you are willing to use them daily for the recommended time, don’t waste your money. Head to an esthetician that you trust for the real deal.

4)    Products That Exfoliate:

People are always looking for ways to remove dead skin cells. And for the last several years, the trend was to use products you find in your pantry or at the grocery to deep clean and exfoliate.  This year, it looks like people will be heading back to the spa for products and treatments that exfoliate. Products which include vitamin A or a derivative do the best job of exfoliating the skin and increasing cell turnover. At home peel kits have risen to fame recently because they give busy customers the opportunity to exfoliate on their own time. Thalgo MCeutic Intensive At Home Peel concentrates a dual power of exfoliation and renewal (chemical and enzymatic). It’s the perfect way to even and clear the complexion, refine the skin’s texture and leaves skin radiant.

5)    Serums:

A continuing trend from 2016, Serums are still going to be popular this year. They truly are a great way to enhance the skin care routine because they are weightless, easy to use, and provide additional moisture, minerals and antioxidants. The results have been stunning and customers are hooked. There are serums for every skin type and every skin condition. Serums for hydration, skin brightening, skin firmness, etc. If you are not sure what type of serum you need, contact your esthetician for advice. Thalgo’s Silicium Concentrate reduces wrinkles and firms the eyelids, facial contours and neck. By fighting against visible wrinkles and skin slackening, this concentrated serum soaks the skin in active ingredients to redefine facial contours. Used as a treatment, it has a long-term in-depth action.

There’s no way to avoid it, winter is here, the holidays are here, and like clock work, your skin is dry. It happens this time every year, and if you are in the path of recent snowstorms and frigid temps, your skin is likely taking a beating. You don’t have to suffer through holiday parties and Uncle Max’s stories of the good ole days with dry, red, irritated skin. Here are some solutions that even Santa would be proud of:

1)    Consider a serum under your day and/or night cream for extra hydration. Thalgo Mulit-Soothing Concentrate is the perfect way to add another source of moisture to your daily regimen. This 7-day treatment will soothe reactive or sensitive skin relieving any discomfort caused by dryness. It’s also great for redness and contains Lipopeptides which increase the skin’s tolerance, making it less sensitive and better able to handle harsh temperatures and dry air from forced heat. Witch Hazel with Vitamin P will also reduce redness and the appearance of dilated blood vessels on the skin’s surface.

2)    Amp up the moisturizer when the temperatures drop. When the air is colder and you are in and out of places blasting the heat, the skin takes a toll. Consider a more emollient cream to help retain the skin’s natural moisture. Thalgo Nutri-Soothing Rich Cream is a great way to do just that. It’s the first skin care cream enriched with patented Cold Cream Marine that effectively replenishes, soothes and repairs dry and sensitive skin, and restores a feeling of comfort for up to 24 hours. This is a rich balm, infused with a high-performance nourishing power for very dry and sensitive skin. Tightness, tingling, irritation, roughness and itching are reduced and the skin’s barrier is reinforced to prevent further dehydration.

3)    Another great way to combat the frozen tundra is to use a mask for a powerful moisturizing treatment. Thalgo Deeply Nourishing Mask repairs and soothes all feelings of discomfort of dry and sensitive skin. With this extremely comforting, soothing texture, the skin feels intensely nourished; feelings of tightness and itchiness are reduced, and roughness and flakiness are less visible. This allergen-free mask infuses essential fatty acids (Omega -6,) and has a sweet and comforting scent

With a little extra TLC Santa won’t need to worry about your skin anymore. It will become more hydrated, nourished, and visible signs of dehydration will disappear. Proceed with caution, though, Santa will still know if you’ve been bad or good. We can’t help you with that one.

why you need skin care

Good skincare isn’t just about getting facials, it’s also about the products that you put on your skin every day. You may not often think about why you need good skincare, but in case you are curious, here are some pretty important reasons why you should:

1) Your face is the first impression you make.

This says it all. You can’t live life hiding your face all the time, so taking good care of your skin is a great way to make a good first impression. Good skin says that you care about how you look, you care about your hygiene and it shows you care about your health.

2) Healthy skin begets healthier skin.

Did you know that taking care of your skin by cleansing, hydrating and regularly exfoliating promotes cell turnover to new healthy skin cells? Healthy skin cells = healthy younger looking skin.

3) Looking good is directly linked to feeling good.

Good skincare helps you look good and when you look good you mentally feel good.

4) Good skincare products will help prevent aging.

Keeping your skin healthy and hydrated can and will help prevent fine lines and wrinkles which are the tell tale signs of aging.

5) Deep cleansing the skin regularly will help prevent acne.

Proper cleansing and exfoliation of the outer layer of the skin (the Stratum Corneum), will prevent bacteria from becoming trapped thus causing acne.

6) Facials give you the opportunity to relax and relaxing is directly related to good health.

Studies show that stress left untreated can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure and heart problems. So….taking care of your skin could save your life. Ok, so maybe that’s a little dramatic but you get the picture.

There are countless other reasons that skincare is important, but this sampling illustrates some of the most important examples. For more information about skincare, sign up for our newsletter.

Skincare for the Seasons

Sep 21, 2016 12:23:31 AM

skin care

There are many myths about skincare. And many trends that are not so trendy anymore. But one thing is certainly not a myth: We need to update and adjust our skincare routine as the seasons change. Here’s a quick guide to help your skin stay healthy no matter the season.

Summer Months:

When the skies are blue and the temperature is high, it’s easy to think that we don’t need moisturizer, especially in areas where the humidity is higher. But this is not the case. In fact, prolonged exposure to the sun can not only cause skin cancer it can also cause dehydration. Estheticians everywhere from Omaha to Florida are seeing clients suffering from dry skin in the summer months. It’s just as important to replenish the skin’s moisture on a daily basis in the summer as it is in the winter. The difference however, is the type of moisturizer.

If you have oily, problematic or combination skin, you battle the shiny look all summer long. Stick with a summer moisturizer with long lasting anti-shine correction to minimize oil production. Contrary to some of the myths, oily or combination skin is just as sensitive to the sun as dry or normal skin, so don’t skip the sunscreen. Look for something with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for more effective coverage. Get in the habit of wearing sunscreen even if you don’t plan to be out all day long.

For normal to dry skin, summer moisturizer and sunscreen is still crucial. Nothing will advance the aging process more than exposing the skin to the sun without proper protection. There are many combination moisturizers that hydrate and offer SPF sun protection too. But be sure that the active ingredients in the moisturizer and the active sun protection are at the top of the list of ingredients. Many times combination products skimp on the important ingredients making them less effective. Choose a moisturizer that’s lighter such a lotion so it doesn’t cause congestion.

Winter Months:

In some areas, the arrival of the colder weather is gradual and you have time to ease into your winter skincare regimen. For others it literally happens overnight and they know it’s important to have winter skincare at the ready.

If you have oily or combination skin, you will want to add a hydrating serum under your moisturizer to protect you from harsh wind and cold temperatures. This tiny addition to your everyday routine can make a world of difference. Look for a serum or concentrate that is made specifically for your skin type so it doesn’t clog the pores.

Normal to dry skin takes a real beating in cold temperatures. Move to a cream instead of a lotion when the temperatures drop and add a daily hydrating serum underneath. If you’re still dry, add a moisturizing mask once a week to boost hydration. Be careful with peels during this time, as they can cause unintentional dehydration.

No matter your skin type, moisturizer and sunscreen are not the only changes you can make to protect your skin from extreme weather. Choose a nourishing lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from the cold. And become diligent about hand and body cream. Forced heat in our homes and offices can create dry skin. Gently exfoliate in the shower daily and apply a nourishing cream all over. Look for ingredients like shea butter and natural oils to help keep the skin from drying.

The Next Big Thing in Skincare

Sep 6, 2016 4:38:32 PM

algae in skin care

As a culture, we are always chasing the latest trends and the next big thing. Whether it be fashion, diet, or exercise, the trends are always changing. Skincare is no different. Current buzzwords are like pendulums, swinging back and forth from one popular ingredient or trend to the next. In a recent blog, we defined the latest buzzwords to help you stay on top of what’s current in skincare.

Lately it seems like “natural” is the latest trend. But this isn’t news for Thalgo. We have been in the business of “natural” for over 50 years with the use of algae, seaweed and seawater in our skin care and body products. In fact, Thalgo Spa treatments use real seawater and seaweed to effectively treat a range of conditions from skin problems, such as eczema, to excess weight, low energy levels and fluid retention.

We all know how beneficial the sea is for health and well-being. Thalgo has been able to harness these extraordinary benefits in its range of spa treatments and skincare products. Thalgo has explored the sea depths and identified specific seaweeds with anti-aging, slimming, detoxifying, rebalancing, hydrating and soothing properties.

Our patented Micronized Marine Algae (MMA) provides outstanding results in the medical treatment of conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis and skin disorders. Due to a unique manufacturing process, the cell walls of the marine algae are literally exploded to release the active inner ingredients. The micro-particles of the resulting powder ensure remarkable skin penetration.

The sea is where life on our planet began. Three billion years ago the first living cells were single cell blue algae. When you analyze seawater under a microscope, you can see it has a very similar structure to blood plasma. The human body is made up of approximately 70% water. The sea makes up 3/4 of the earth’s surface. Algae are responsible for 1/3 of the world’s oxygen production.

With all of the benefits the sea has to offer, why wouldn’t you choose Thalgo for your naturally based skincare?

The Ultimate Cheat Sheet on Anti-Aging

Aug 31, 2016 9:07:30 PM

skin care

Let’s face it, we are all aging. But even though the clock is ticking and the years are going by, one thing we shouldn’t stress about is anti-aging. Getting older can’t be avoided, but the truth is, we can put up a good fight. Here are a few simple steps you can take to look your best and help prevent unnecessary aging.

1) Protect your skin from the Sun - The number one cause of skin aging is sun exposure. Yet everyday in the summer we see sunbathers. It’s simply not worth it. Protect your skin with a quality sunscreen. Look for ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. And if you aren’t sure if your sunscreen measures up, check with the Skin Care Foundation to be sure.

2) Sleep - Studies have confirmed that the inadequacy of your sleep directly impacts the skin. According to Everyday Health, when you don’t rest enough, your healthy glow is compromised. Other direct impacts can be an increase in skin conditions such as psoriasis, and eczema and general inflammation.

3) Stop stressing – Speaking of skin conditions, stress can exacerbate these as well. It can also prevent you from sleeping…a vicious cycle indeed.

4) Exercise your mind and body – If you have heard it once, you have heard it a thousand times. That’s because it’s so important. Even 20 minutes a day can help clear your mind and improve your overall health. Your skin is an organ and it needs to be taken care of like the rest of your body.

5) Eat to live – almost as important at #1. Eat well and your skin will reflect it. And don’t skimp on the H20. Find out how much water your body needs and make the commitment to drink. Your skin will look more hydrated and your organs will thank you too.

6) Change up the routine…routinely. Nothing makes us look more tired and dull, than doing the same thing over and over. We know your job may be mundane, but try to factor in snippet’s of something new each week. Try hiking, or walking a new trail. Try a new museum or a good book. Anything that releases you from the tiresome embrace of routine. Your body and your skin will look and feel better.

7) Do What You Love – Similar to #6, but not exactly. If it’s at all possible, spend most of your day doing what you love. If you hate your job, routine, etc., seriously consider something else. A new career or hobby will absolutely have a positive impact on anti-aging and your overall health. It’s scary to make changes but not many who take the plunge toward something they love talk about regretting it.

8) Get into a good skincare regimen. This one seems so obvious when we are talking about antiaging skin care but it’s so important. Check out our recent blog for more help deciphering skin care buzz words and help define a good regimen. To keep your skin looking it’s best and to help slow down the natural aging process, you need to be applying:

  •
    • Antioxidants – to protect the skin from damaging free radicals caused by UVA and UVB rays. Vitamin C is a popular example.
    • Retinol – or any Vitamin A derivative. These promote cell turnover, which produces new collagen and elastin (the stars of younger looking skin).
    • Products with proven anti-aging ingredients such as peptides, collagen, hyaluronic acid.

It’s important to note that no matter what you do, you are still going to age. But what you don’t want to do is age prematurely. The ultimate goal is to preserve the natural quality of the skin the best way possible. And one last piece of advice - trust your esthetician.

5 Undeniable Reasons People Hate Beauty

Aug 16, 2016 10:01:44 PM

People Hate Beauty

It sounds harsh but it’s entirely true: People. Hate. Beauty. They don’t mean to hate beauty and it’s not a matter of jealousy, it’s more a matter of truth. Everyone, wants to feel good about they way they look. And everyone wants to feel beautiful. But no one wants to be mislead by false promises and lies.

With so many skin care product lines making false promises it’s no wonder people have begun to hate beauty. They hate paying for sub-par products that don’t deliver what they promise, and they hate being lied to.

So enough with the lies, it’s time to face the reality. You as the consumer must learn how to decipher the truth from the lies. Our recent blog: “The Top 5 Most Promised Skin Care Results,” discussed this very point. Skin care companies may not mean to mislead consumers with advertising, but they certainly do a good job of confusing them.

When you are researching new skincare products, here are a few tips:

1)    Know what you are looking for and don’t buy what you don’t need. Nothing is more confusing than not knowing what you need. A basic skin care regimen for those 20 and above should include: cleanser, moisturizer and eye cream. Add in sunscreen if you are going to be outdoors. When you approach your 40’s you’ll want to add a serum and a retinoid to help slow the aging process and promote cell regeneration.

2)    Beware of claims that seem outrageous. You know the old adage: “If it seems too good to be true it probably is.” This is especially true with skin care. Products promising to “reverse the signs of aging,” or “make you look 10 years younger” after 1 application, must have some pretty high quality ingredients and some amazing test results to support such claims. Buyer beware.

3)    Speaking of ingredients, make sure the active ingredients boasted by the manufacturer are among the first 5 on the ingredients list. If you don’t find them there, they won’t be effective since they will be diluted by other lesser ingredients and fillers.

4)    Try before you buy. Any reputable company, spa or aesthetician will offer you product samples and encourage your feedback. It’s tough to know exactly what your skin needs so don’t be afraid of the trial and error process and walk away from any company that’s not willing to take the time to help you define your skin’s needs.

When you begin researching skincare, look for companies that have established reputations in the industry and stay away from those requiring a membership. Find an esthetician or spa that you feel comfortable with and ask questions. The overall goal for them is to make you happy so they should be more than happy to help you with the process!

Stress and the skin

We often hear about the effects that stress has on our body but we may not think about the direct implications it has on our skin.

According to the mayoclininc, when discussing the physiological way our Body deals with stress: “your brain comes hard-wired with an alarm system for your protection. When your brain perceives a threat, it signals your body to release a burst of hormones to fuel your capacity for a response. This has been labeled the "fight-or-flight" response.”

Our body can react to this type of stress in numerous ways. Normal reactions are headaches, nervousness, upset stomach, sleeplessness, fatigue and even chest pain.

The other ways that stress can effect the body is with skin conditions. When we are stressed, there are two uncomfortable skin conditions that can appear or worsen due to stress:

1)    Eczema - which causes the skin to be swollen, red, itchy and flaky.

2)    Psoriasis – Red scaly patches of skin that can cause joint pain as well.

There are also less obvious effects that stress has on the skin. Since stress can cause sleeplessness, the skin does not repair itself at night as it should. The result can be dull, tired looking skin, increased fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness under the eyes and even breakouts.

The bottom line, stress can take its toll on our health and our skin as well. We must be as diligent as possible in taking care of our selves to limit the amount of stress we expose ourselves too. While stress is often unavoidable, it’s important to know that there are ways we can combat it. In fact, we recently published a blog to help guide you to wellness.

How we sabotage our skincare

So you’ve acknowledged that it’s time to move from preventative skin care to corrective skincare. Good for you. Many do not make the move until much later than they should. We get it. Admitting that we are aging is never fun. But now that you’re focused, here are some ways you can sabotage your anti-aging skin care routine without even knowing it.

1) Skimping on Sunscreen:

Not using enough sunscreen or forgetting to reapply is as dangerous as not using it at all. Prolonged exposure to UVA rays causes fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and will make your skin look dry, dull and aged.

2) Skipping the Anti-oxidant:

Anti-Oxidant serums are rich with active ingredients such as Collagen, Silicium, Vitamin C and Hylauronic Acid and Peptides. All of these ingredients work to plump, brighten and firm the skin. They are not to be used in place of a moisturizer and shouldn’t be forgotten or skipped as part of your anti-aging regimen.

3) Forgetting to Wash Before Bed:

Missing this important step may seem OK in the moment but it will cost you in the long run. Your skin needs to breath and repair at night. Cleanse well EVERY night and use your skincare products to help the skin replenish and rejuvenate while you sleep.

4) Choosing a Moisturizer That’s Not Meant for Your Skin Type:

If you are 30 don’t use a product that’s meant for someone 50 and vice versa. Not all products are the same and you will not receive the maximum benefit your products have to offer if they are not meant for the age of your skin. The same goes for oily vs. dry skin products.

5) Picking:

You can may remember Mom telling you to stop picking when you were a kid. Well she was right. Picking your skin whether you have blemishes or not, only makes things worse.  If you do have blemishes that need extracting, let your esthetician do this for you so your skin will not be damaged and your blemishes will heal properly.

6) Turning a Blind Eye to Eye Cream:

Eye cream can do wonders to help plump the skin around the eyes and keep it moisturized so that fine lines and wrinkles can be kept at bay or at least be less noticeable.

7) Failing to Exfoliate

Exfoliating regularly rids the skin of dead cells that make it look dull and tired. Use a product with Vitamin A or a derivative of it and your skin will be brighter and appear more youthful.

8) Ditching a Healthy Diet:

What you eat truly does directly impact on your skin. Choose foods like blueberries to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and spinach for firming.

9) Skimming Product Ingredients:

When you are choosing a skin care product, take the time to really look at the label. Be sure that the active ingredients are among the top 3-5. If they are any lower on the list, they are being diluted by emulsifiers and you will not see promised results.

10) Missing Your Zzzzz’s:

According to Everyday Health, “Increased inflammatory cells in the body lead to an increase in the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid, the molecules that give the skin its glow, bounce, and translucency.”

11) Stressing the Small Stuff:

And the big stuff too. Stress increases cortisol levels which can lead to inflammation and damage skin quality, not to mention the general tired puffiness we get when we don’t sleep enough.

Skin Care Buzz Words

No matter the topic, there are always related buzz words. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of the term buzz word is:  “an important-sounding usually technical word or phrase often of little meaning used chiefly to impress laymen.“ The food industry for example, is especially known for trendy buzz words like low fat, low sugar, gluten free, etc. Most buzz words are popular for a time but are temporary at best until a new and more trendy word comes along. The problem with them is they can have an unnecessary influence on consumers if they are not properly understood. Today we offer an explanation of some of the most popular buzz words in the skincare industry today.

Anti-aging – A broad term which relates to products focused on the prevention or correction of aging of the skin.

Peptides –Link together amino acids and when used in skin care products, act like Botox does for the skin, by keeping it in place. This effect can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and smooth the skin lasting up to 9 hours per application

Collagen – A protein which essentially holds the body together. With relation to skin, it is the reason we have firm, elastic skin (or not). As we age we lose on average 1.5% of our body’s collagen. This is why we see the skin begin to sag. Collagen is used in skin care to fade the appearance of wrinkles. It’s also effective when taken as a liquid supplement because it helps the infrastructure of the dermis and stimulates collagen production internally.

Hyaluronic Acid – Has the ability to retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water so when it’s used in skincare products it helps to reduce established and pronounced wrinkles as they are plumped with water.

Vitamin C – An antioxidant used in skincare products to protect the skin from environmental damage caused by UVA/UVB rays and free radicals. It corrects and prevents visible signs of aging.

Botox – a prescriptive medicine used in skin care to treat frown lines and crow’s feet.

Fillers – Cosmetic tissue fillers used to fill deep wrinkles making the face appear smoother.

They may be trendy words but many of them are highly effective when used in quality skin care products. When you are shopping for skin care, be sure that the active ingredients you are interested in are listed in the top 5 ingredients or they aren’t likely to be very effective.

Consumer Profiling

How Companies use your Purchases to Target Ads to You

Like many innocuous terms, Consumer Profiling often gets a bad rap. Mostly because it can be misunderstood as a practice that involves companies “watching” consumers. Sounds creepy right? But let’s take a good look at this practice and once properly defined, it may not seem so negative.

So what is Consumer Profiling? According to about.com, consumer profiling is another name for psychographic data, and it’s defined as “a way of describing a consumer categorically so that they can be grouped for marketing and advertising purposes. It has been shown to be more profitable to target advertising to a specific market segment. As a short-hand way of talking about consumers, market segments are often represented by consumer profiles.”

In other words, consumer profiling is a way for businesses to determine your preferences based on your past purchases. Once determined, your profile is placed into tiered groups so that ads presented to you in the future are based on past purchases. Ideally as the consumer, you will find these ads interesting and want to purchase them again.

While the practice of consumer profiling is an excellent way for companies to gather consumer data and use it to create more meaningful ads, the truth of the matter is that your past data may not always reflect your future needs. A great example is Christmas. Millions of consumers prefer to cyber shop to choose the perfect holiday gift. Profiling based on these types of purchases however can mean future ads might be less meaningful to you personally.

One interesting feature about Consumer Profiling is the way that it changes with you. By tracking past purchases, profiling can adjust ads based on your most recent purchases and target future ads based on age and life-stage cycle. This cycle began when you landed your first job and has moved along with you throughout your adult life as you have increased your buying power. What you can afford when you are 29, working full time with no children is different than what you can afford when you are 41 with 3 children in school and sports. Your life-stage changes even if you aren’t aware that it does and your profile adjusts too.

While skincare purchases are generally made in person, the majority of consumers research products online before they buy. This research gets captured and as a result targeted ads and profiling are born. The important thing while shopping is to be comfortable with your purchase. Sometimes you may just need a one-on-one conversation with your esthetician to know for sure what’s best for you skin.

5 Quick Tips for Better Skin

Mar 22, 2016 10:41:16 AM

skin care

Great skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are 5 quick tips to help you achieve the healthiest skin possible.

1)  Cleanse!

Don’t let a day go by without cleansing your skin. It doesn’t need to be complicated and it won’t take much time, but it’s a big part of having healthy skin. If you don’t cleanse at night before bed, you are leaving behind makeup and dirt particles from the day that can become trapped under dead skin cells. The result will be dull, tired looking skin and possibly blemishes.

2)  Use sunscreen every day.

You have heard it preached over and over and that’s because it’s so important. Sunscreen is a must every day, not just on sunny days. If you aren’t sure how much protection you need, check out our recent blog: Busted! Top 10 Skincare Myths Debunked.

3)  Retinols can work miracles.

Retinols are Vitamin A derivatives that stimulate cell turnover, boost collagen production, even skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Each of these little miracles helps to keep the skin looking as fresh and youthful as possible. Remember to use them only at night as they can make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

4)  Your skin care regimen doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, it can be only 3 steps:

a.  Cleanser – The key to healthy skin is clean skin.

b.  Moisturizer- Be sure to choose one specific for your skin type and age. Ask your esthetician or your dermatologist for help if you need it. Most reputable spas offer complimentary skin care and product consultations.

c.  Serum- The most popular and arguably the most effective anti-aging serums contain Vitamin C. Not only will Vitamin C reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but it will work to protect the skin from free radicals caused by environmental dangers such as UVA and UVB rays.

5)  Skin care involves more than just your face.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, regular exfoliation all over your body will help eliminate buildup that can become cancerous.

Thalgo Skincare

For many of us, the idea of skin care can be a daunting. There are so many product choices and so many questions. What does this ingredient do? What kind of moisturizer do I need for sensitive skin? The questions could go on and on and the answers can be confusing. To help solve some of these skin care mysteries, we put together a list of the Top 10 skin care questions we have been asked over the years.

1)I lead a busy life and have a strict budget, what are the bare necessities that I need for my skin?

Answer: You don’t need to spend a lot of time with a long list of daily skin care products. Choose a good cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. If you are noticing fine lines around the eye, an eye cream is also an option. The Thalgo Collagen Roll On is great way to treat under eye circles and puffiness and it won’t break the bank!

2) Where did I get these brown spots on my face?

Answer: Brown spots, known as hyperpigmentation, are the result of past skin exposure. These spots rise to the surface as we age and can appear darker with additional sun exposure. We recommend using a product with Vitamin C to lighten the appearance and of course a daily broad spectrum sunscreen to prevent more damage.

3) How can I keep my skin from looking oily throughout the day?

Answer: Oily skin is caused by over active sebaceous glands. Use a product designed to neutralize the shiny appearance of excess sebum. We recommend the Thalgo Perfect Matte Fluid for a fresh matte finish all day long.

4) Is it possible to shrink the size of my pores?

Answer: No. Pore size is genetic, so there’s nothing to change the size but you can minimize the appearance of the pores. The best way to do this is to keep them clean and use product with a Vitamin A derivative to continually exfoliate the skin and aid in cell turnover. Try the Thalgo Normalizer Crème/Serum to refine the skin’s texture and and tighten the pores.

5) What causes breakouts and how can I avoid them?

Answer: Breakouts can occur from stress (forehead), hormones (cheeks), and even stomach and bowel issues (chin). The best thing to do is to define the cause of the breakout. If your breakouts are stress related, you can incorporate positive ways to reduce stress like exercise and yoga. If it’s a stomach issue, work with your doctor to determine the cause, it may be a simple dietary fix. Hormonal breakouts are difficult to avoid. Be sure you are cleansing well daily and consider a retinol to exfoliate the skin so bacteria will be less likely to become trapped.

6) How important is it to wash my face every day?

Answer: Cleansing before you go to sleep is one of the most important steps to having good skin. Cleansing the skin removes environmental dirt particles and makeup. Skipping this daily step can result in acne, congested and dull looking skin. Try Thalgo’s Pure Velevet Cleansing Cream to free the skin of impurities.

7) Why am I still breaking out after 40?

Answer: While there’s no real explanation for adult acne, hormones and stress are likely suspects. We’ve said it before and and it bears repeating. Look for a Vitamin A derivative like a retinoid to keep the skin exfoliated and cleanse well. See a dermatologist if your skin care products are helping.

8) What are these lines in my forehead above my eyes?

Answer: Those lines, also known as “the elevens,” are actually caused by the corrugator muscle and many years of deep thought, worry or expressions. As the years pass, these lines can appear deeper and more noticeable. We recommend the Thalgo Hyaluronic Filler high-precision filling serum which acts at the center of the wrinkles to effectively fill them and erase the signs of passing time. Wrinkles are actually pushed from beneath the skin.

9) Why do I have more wrinkles on one side of my face than the other?

Answer: You are likely sleeping on that side of your face consistently. Sleeping on your back is recommended to resolve this problem and although it may be tough to do at first, it’s also better for your back too.

10) Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days?

Answer: YES! The suns rays are present every day and although you will not burn on cloudy days, UVA rays (the rays that are responsible for aging), are still present and can cause damage. Get in the habit of wearing sunscreen every day that you are leaving your house.

Busted! Top 10 Skincare Myths Debunked

Mar 8, 2016 11:35:52 AM

Skin Care Myths

Merriam-Webster defines the word MYTH as “an idea or story that is believed by many people but that is not true.” The number of existing myths is likely innumerable and some are more believable than others. But when is comes to your skin, here are our top 10 myths, along with the truth about them to set the record straight.

1) Aging is genetic. While genetics certainly plays a role in how your skin ages, the reality is that your daily habits matter more. Protecting your skin from the sun for example is one way you can prevent premature aging.

2) Your Diet has no impact on your skin. This could not be more false. What you eat, (and drink), has a direct impact on the skin and eating foods high in sugar, and drinking too much alcohol will eventually effect the skin making it look dull, and lax.

3) Sunscreen is not necessary on cloudy days. This might be the most common misconception.  Sunscreen should be worn every day regardless of the weather. Protecting the skin form UVA and UVB rays is not only crucial to prevent premature aging, it’s also the safest way to protect from Melanoma (skin cancer), which can be potentially deadly.

4) The higher the SPF the longer I can stay in the sun. This is absolutely incorrect. If you are in the sun, know that your sunscreen will only be effective for about 2-4 hours, so reapply often. SPF refers to how well the sunscreen will protect you. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30. SPF’s higher than that don’t offer much more protection to filter out the suns rays.

5) Stress doesn’t effect my skin. Your skin will absolutely show signs of stress because your body works overtime to compensate when stress levels are high. Stress causes the body to produce hormones which tell the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Excess oil can become clogged causing acne. Consider de-stressing with yoga or meditation.

6) Scrubbing the face twice a day is best. When cleansing the skin, it’s best to take a “less this more approach.” Use a gentle cleanser with light pressure when cleansing and consider one that’s free of alcohol to ensure you are not drying the skin. If your skin is normal to dry, cleanse only in the evening. You need the oils your skin produces overnight to act as a protective barrier during the day.

7) Daily Exfoliation keeps the skin looking young. This one is only partially wrong. Daily exfoliation for sensitive skin can lead to irritation especially if you experience rosacea or eczema. If you are exfoliating daily, be sure to use one that’s gentle. Over exfoliating can cause dryness, irritation and even peeling.

8) The way you sleep does not effect your skin. False. Sleeping on your stomach or side can exacerbate existing wrinkles and cause new lines to form. It’s best to sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees, this is also the best position for your back too.

9) If your skin care regimen doesn’t work right away, move on. Not true, if you are trying out a new a product or regimen, give it 8 weeks to work on your skin. Many active ingredients need time to begin to change the skin and work effectively.

10) Brown spots on the skin are caused by age. Actually, these spots, known as hyper-pigmentation, are the result of many years of unprotected sun exposure. They can actually begin to appear as early as your 20’s or as a direct result of a severe sunburn. Look for skincare products rich in Vitamin C to help lighten the spots and minimize their appearance.

While the internet has certainly helped to educate us on proper skin care, there will always be misconceptions and questions. It’s best to stay educated and know the truth. If you have questions about your skin that you can’t answer online, your esthetician or dermatologist will always be willing to offer you help.

The Evolution of Skincare

Feb 24, 2016 7:50:00 PM

skin care

According to The History of Skincare.com, there is significant reason to believe that the Egyptians began the practice of skin care somewhere around 3000 BC. Indicating that Queens and Pharaoh’s were as concerned about beauty back then as we are today.

Ancient facial treatments incorporated natural ingredients such as clay and oils to hydrate and protect the skin from the sun and wild mushrooms to lighten the skin. Holistic practices incorporating facial massage and exercise were also used to improve the appearance of wrinkles. Over the years, facial masks made of anything from sesame seeds, black beans, seaweed to jellyfish were used to maintain a youthful appearance.

Marine mud, seaweed and algae are still readily used in skincare products and treatments today. Thalgo Marine Skin Care has perfected the use of elements of the sea with their line of professional skin and body care products.

Why Algae?  Algae have the amazing ability to increase the rich content of minerals and trace elements of the sea and restore its strengthening, remineralizing and balancing properties, sometimes by up to 100,000 times. The star of treatments, algae act like sponges in Thalassotherapy to give you the best that seawater has to offer.

They have a very high concentration of mineral elements (iodine, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc, cobalt, iron, fluoride, etc.) and also contain almost every vitamin and amino acid. Thanks to this particularly rich composition, algae boast antiviral as well as antibacterial qualities. They are used to heal rheumatism and regulate the thyroid gland.

While the most common use is in algae body wraps, in which the body is entirely covered with hot algae before being wrapped in a hot blanket, algae can also be used in a bath or even find their way onto your plate. The muscles relax, blood circulation is reactivated and toxins are eliminated.

The story of skincare is a long one and involves many interesting practices, but the bottom line is, we all just want to look and feel good about our skin. For more information on how your skin can look it’s best and the Thalgo extensive line of Marine Skin and Body Care, go to ThalgoUSA.com.

Changes in skincare

According to Euromonitor International, “skincare continues to be beauty’s most valuable category.” With so many external influences to the industry, it’s no surprise that 2016 is shaping up to be the year that changes skincare. Let’s take a look at why this year will prove to bring more to the industry than years past:

1)   Knowledgeable buyers: With the internet now as the center of our worlds, consumers are savvier than ever before.

2)   Technological Advances: Manufacturers are putting to use the latest technologies to create the best skincare products and devises possible.

3)   Nutrition and skincare: Evidence continues to prove there’s a true connection between nutrition and how it effects the skin. Drinkable collagen supplements, for example, are 1 way people are helping to keep their skin healthy from the inside out.

4)   Devices: LED, Light Therapy, Ultrasound, Microcurrent…. we could go on an on. Devices are more popular than ever and advances in technology will continue this year.

5)   Ingredients: Modern ingredients mean more effective products. Marine skin care for example, continues to make a “splash” The use of algae in skincare is so more effective because it is absorbed so readily by human skin.

6)   Natural and Organic: Consumers now desire skincare with natural and organic ingredients which inspires manufacturers to continue developing in this direction.

7)   Alternative forms of healing: Skin care is often partnered with wellness and holistic care. How you feel about your appearance has a direct effect on your overall well being.

8)   Social Media: Social media can be an excellent tool to educate and gauge what’s popular in the industry and what is still needed.

9)   Pro-Youth Treatments: Parents who believe in good skin care are raising kids with good skin care habits too and the surge in teen facial treatments is proof.

10)  Sunscreen and skincare: The knowledge of environmental dangers to the skin has prompted sunscreen awareness, which is at an all-time high.

11)  Talent: Spas continue to recruit great talent and manufacturers are recruiting the best engineers to formulate products that are better for the skin and more effective.

12)  Genetics: Knowledge of how they effect the skin continues to amaze and help determine effective courses of treatment.

13)  The need to unplug and relax: With the explosion of the internet, social media, and cell phones the need to unplug and relax is greater than ever. Consumers are more open to the benefits of doing this and spas are making it more enjoyable.

14)  Blends:  Such as skincare infused foundations, BB Creams and concealers that have anti-aging ingredients are highly desired and more effective than ever.

15)  Antioxidants: Consumer desire to protect the skin against environmental dangers such as free radicals have made antioxidants the star of anti-aging and will continue to catapult this ingredient to the top of the “must- have “list.

16)  Better Spas and Resorts: Local spas and resorts continue to improve the quality of the visit and the level of skin care they provide.

Skincare promises

Skin care companies have done an excellent job of confusing consumers over the years. In their defense though, marketing claims and promises about what their products can do is the best way to sell, and inform potential buyers. When you pick up a tube of eye cream, you want to know what it can do for you, right? The problem is there are so many companies making so many claims its getting confusing. What to buy and why to buy it can be as tough a decision as what kind of latte to order. To help make your decisions a little less daunting, we have put together a list of the top 5 promises skincare companies make and what you should really be looking for to make good decisions.

1) Visibly Erases Wrinkles - When a cream, serum or lotion promises this it makes you want to run to the store to buy it. But there’s a lot to consider before making a purchase. The underlying cause of fine lines and wrinkles is dehydration. You will want to look for a product that will hydrate the skin. If you are looking to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, try the Thalgo Hylauronic Filler high-precision filling serum. This acts at the center of the wrinkles to effectively fill them and erase the signs of passing time.

2) Evens Skin Tone – The key to having an even skin tone is to exfoliate weekly. We recommend exfoliating to remove the dead skin cells that cause dull, dry looking skin. The Thalgo MCEUTIC Resurfacer Cream-Serum is very effective and perfects the surface of the skin. Highly concentrated in active ingredients and patented Marine Mesolift for optimal penetration and a “new skin” effect. Residual marks are visibly reduced and skin tone is more even and radiant.

3) Lifts and Firms Skin – Finding a product that lifts and firms the skin is not easy. When researching, look for one that contains ingredients such as Shea butter and Jojoba Oil, they intensely nourishes, protects and restores skin suppleness. Thalgo Silicium Cream is a rich and luxurious daily cream which fills wrinkles and lifts facial and neck contours. By fighting against visible wrinkles and skin slackening, this rich, melt-on-the-skin cream fills wrinkles and reshapes facial contours.

4) Hydrates and Moisturizes – Likely the number one claim made by skin creams. To treat this, Thalgo suggests the Absolute Hydra-Marine Concentrate; express treatment program (7 days) that refreshes, revitalizes and plumps. It is a true "shot’’ of moisture that delivers exceptional hydrating power in record time. Active ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, keeps the skin plump and hydrated.

5) Reverses the signs of aging – When you see a product that makes this claim, look closely at the ingredients. Make sure they can back the claim with high quality ingredients and check to be sure they have study results too. Thalgo’s  Prodige des Océans Essence  is one product that truly does reverse the signs of aging. This regenerating essence  infuses the skin with 61 marine biomimetic nutrients (15 minerals and trace elements, 7 vitamins, 21 amino acids, 14 fatty acids, 3 carbohydrates and polyphenols) essential to the skin's ability to regenerate itself and to the perfect expression of its beauty.

When you are researching skincare be sure to look closely at the claims companies make  and how they are supported. If their promises seem outrageous, investigate further and be wary of companies that make you sign up for automatic replenishment. Many of these are scams and when you try to cancel your “membership” they are nowhere to be found. A reputable skincare company will always be willing to share research data to back their claims, will offer samples so you can test their product yourself and will willingly welcome all of your questions.

Skincare on a Budget

Skincare on a budget, is that possible? It seems like good skincare often comes with dollar signs. From wrinkle creams that promise to erase years of aging, to serums tasked with removing the sins from the sun, there’s much to choose from and loads of opportunity to spend. But taking care of your skin and not breaking the bank really is possible. And skin care doesn’t need to be complicated as we discussed in a recent blog. But to help you save money on your skin, here are 5 tips for the savvy shopper:

1) Skip the morning cleanse. Yes, you read that right. You don’t need to cleanse morning a night. A good cleaning at night before bed is enough for most skin types. In fact, the oils on your skin in the morning will provide a barrier of protection and a good base for the day. Washing your face twice a day can dry the skin unnecessarily, especially during the colder months. Cleansing only once a day will save you money on cleanser and it’s good for your skin.

2)  Make the most of your body cream. The cost of body lotions, creams and moisturizers can add up. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “apply it to damp skin as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in the moisture.” By doing this you will save money on moisturizer as your will be  using less and getting more out of it.

3)  Dual Purpose Products are actually ok... (contrary to what you may have heard). Choosing a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it, for example,  is just fine….If the active ingredients are at the top of the ingredients list. A good moisturizer may contain Hyaluronic Acid or Vitamin C, and a good sunscreen should always have Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. When products have a dual purpose, often times something gets compromised. Make sure the good stuff is in the top 5 of the list of ingredients. If not, skip it and look for one that does.

4) Make the most of your eye cream. Have you ever noticed those fine lines on your top lip? If you haven’t yet, keep looking, they are likely to appear in your future. No need to worry though, you can apply your eye cream in this area and not only lessen the appearance of fine lines; you can actually help them from appearing too. How’s that for more bang for your buck?

5) The key to healthy skin is actually free: You will need far less moisturizer and corrective skincare products if you commit to drinking the water that’s suggested, every day. Dehydrated skin looks dull and tired. Continued dehydration leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Calculating the amount of water you need isn’t difficult, according to slenderkitchen.com.

Thalgo is committed to bringing you top of the line skin care with the finest ingredients at a price point that won’t make you cringe. To find out more about algae based skincare, sign up for our newsletter.

Myths about skin care

Most skin care articles and social media posts are likely rich with good information and tips about how to care for your skin and protect it as you age. The ability to access such information is a great benefit to anyone interested in looking their best and caring for their skin.  But what if the information you read isn’t true? What if the tips that you read about are not good for you or for your skin? This is what your esthetician does NOT want you to know about. Following poor skin care advice can not only irritate your skin, it can have long term effects on it, some of which can be irreversible.

To clear up any conflicting information you may have read, here are the top 5 myths about skincare debunked:

1)  Myth: The Higher the SPF in my sunscreen, the more protection I am getting.

Truth: This is a common misconception. In fact, the SPF rating can give a false sense of security.  According to Skin Inc. Magazine, “an SPF of 50 is only marginally more protective than an SPF of 15.” Instead of looking at the number, look for a broad spectrum sunscreen with protection from UVA and UVB rays and active ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Make sure these actives are among the first 3 ingredients on the bottle so you know they are the most concentrated and wear sunscreen even on cloudy days.

2)  Myth:  You must cleanse your face morning and night.

Truth: Cleansing the skin in the morning is not necessarily needed (unless you have acne prone skin).  In fact, cleansing twice a day can actually dry the skin. The truth is if you cleanse well at night and apply a good moisturizer, you will wake up with some moisture and oil on the skin in the morning that provides a great barrier of protection throughout the day. So skip the morning cleanse and apply your daily skin care products (including suncreen) before going outdoors.

3)  Myth: Eating Greasy food can cause breakouts.

Truth:  Science doesn’t support this one. Although eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is recommended, there’s no actual proof that the pizza you ate last night will lead to a breakout today. Pimples are caused by bacteria and skin cells and  often linked to hormones…not your diet. Still, limiting the amount of high calorie greasy food is always recommended for good health and will help to keep your skin looking radiant.

4)  Myth: Good Skincare can erase signs of aging.

Truth: While good skincare certainly helps maintain the youthful appearance of your skin, there are other contributing factors such as nutrition and good circulation. If your arteries for example, are not working properly, the end result will be a dull dry complexion.  If you suspect you may have a similar problem, seek help from your healthcare provider to normalize blood pressure and prevent permanent damage to your health and to your skin.

5) Myth: There’s no difference between over the counter skin care products and medical grade professional products.

Truth: Professional products are manufactured with a higher concentration of active ingredients such as peptides, hyaluronic acid, algae, salicylic acid, vitamins C,D and E and collagen to name a few. Over the counter, less expensive options may have these ingredients but they are manufactured with such small amounts of them and often diluted by emulsifiers so they aren’t able to be as effective as professional products. Thalgo Marine Skin Care has developed a wide range of skin care products designed for every type of skin. Rich in algae, the product line is renowned for treatments and products that deliver excellent results. Founded in 1964, it is the original French marine spa brand, and from the outset, has been led by science and marine research. Today, THALGO is the range chosen by over 20,000 top spas, resorts, and thalassotherapy centers in more than 90 countries.

Does your Skin Need a Holiday Detox?

Jan 5, 2016 2:23:46 PM

Does Your Skin Need a Holiday Detox

The Holidays have come and gone and though you probably have made many great memories with family and friends you may be facing some not-so-great additional pounds as a result. You are not alone. Between the family gatherings, the office parties and the holiday stress, your new- found weight is hardly a surprise. Before you begin to stress about it, there are a few things that you can do to detox right away to begin moving the scale and your skin in a positive and healthy direction.

1)  Sleep. During the holidays you likely ran around shopping, baking, wrapping and, well, eating. One thing you were not likely indulging yourself in was sleep. According to Fox News: “New research shows that not getting enough sleep could increase your risk of overeating and obesity. The study suggests that sleeping for less than seven hours could boost “distracted eating” and cause a larger intake of calories. Those who sleep for a shorter amount of time eat almost nine minutes per day more than those who sleep longer.” And it’s not breaking news, lack of sleep increases dark circles and under eye puffiness making you look just as tired as you feel.

2)  Drink. Water, not alcohol (you may have over indulged in that over the holidays too). You can begin detoxing by replacing your soda and sugary juices with water. By doing this, you will reduce calorie intake significantly and feel fuller at the same time. Drinking more water will also maintain moisture in your skin helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

3)  Eat. Yes eat. It sounds like the opposite of what you need to detox after the holiday gorging but you do need to eat in order to lose. Eating healthy foods in regular intervals keeps your blood sugar even and will help your body burn calories more readily. So avoid the temptation to starve yourself until the scale reacts, because the faster you lose the weight the quicker it comes back.

Once you have mastered sleeping, hydrating, and eating better, there are some additional things that you can do detox your body and your skin from all the holiday fun. Thalgo has developed a line of products to help you begin the New Year healthier and revitalized:

Thalgo Slim 7 – A 7-day express treatment to boost weight loss. This Slimming Drink provides a high concentration of plant and algae extracts in a red fruit flavor drink which boosts metabolism, activates thermogenesis (the conversion of dietary calories for energy), and encourages the elimination of water.

Thalgo Slim LC - A comprehensive slimming action that helps burn calories, stimulate the release of fat stored in adipocytes, and limit the absorption of fats. This is ideal for those looking to lose weight or streamline their figure.

Thalgo Svelt Control - Helps to control weight by decreasing fat absorption and suppressing appetite. It is for those who wish to avoid gaining weight during occasional dietary excesses (restaurants, parties, etc.) or limit their caloric intake when stopping a diet: to stabilize weight.

Thalgo Slim Control – Once you have your weight in check, this anti-fat and anti-sugar sugar supplement enriched with vitamins A, D & E will help you maintain and manage the occasional dietary “slip.”

Thalgo Nutrition also offers products to reduce cellulite, correct and reduce swollen legs, and reduce the bloating caused by menopause. If your New Year’s resolution was to get healthy and detox your skin and body from the holidays, now you have a place to start!

Where Will Skincare Be a Year From Now

Dec 29, 2015 5:08:45 PM

Skincare in 2016

While it’s impossible to precisely predict where the Skincare Industry will be at the end of next year, one thing is for sure, the “face” of skincare is always changing and in order to stay relevant, skincare manufactures need to change with it. One way to do that is to take a look at today’s clients and their buying history.  In our recent blog, How Millennials View Skin Care, we discussed “Generation Y’s” (those born from 1977 – 2000). This group holds incredible buying power today since they currently make up 25% of the entire US population.  The needs and desires of these Gen Y’s will continue to make a significant impact on how skincare brands are developing and marketing their products. These consumers are savvy and knowledgeable and look for products that are not only effective for the skin but are as natural as possible.

According to a recent Skin Inc. article, Top Professional Skin Care Trends in 2016, the importance of “natural” when referring to skin care and to spa treatments is currently very prominent.  Clients in 2016 will continue to push for natural products and treatments and will shy away from products heavy laden with chemicals.  Skincare brands have reacted to this growing trend and are expected to continue do so in the coming year by reducing the use of harsh chemical. While it’s impossible for all ingredients to be 100 % natural and still get good results, the shift toward increasing the percentage of natural ingredients per product will continue into 2016.

Skin Inc.’s article goes on to mention the importance not putting our customers in a box in the coming year. While every spa wants to personalize products and treatments for clients based on social status and age etc., we have to recognize that this practice of demographic pigeon holing no longer exists. Clients today want spa treatments and products personalized to their interests rather than their social demographics. It makes sense. No one wants to be treated like a number; we all want to be treated as an individual. The good news is, this makes your job that much more fun! You can finally develop treatments and services that are personal and meaningful to your client as an individual. And skin care companies can work toward developing products in that same vein as well.

In the coming year Social Media will continue to influence trends in skincare. With the click of a button we can now easily see how wellness and skincare is being handled in other places, even globally. We can track trends in other countries and find out how they have adapted practices to their client’s needs. And although climate and geographies differ, this helps drive new and creative treatments and products and also helps define those that we should stay away from.

Anticipating some of these trends, Thalgo recently developed a new medically-inspired product range called MCeutic. This revolutionary Medi-cosmetic line featured in Spa Business, uses patented product naturally inspired Mesolift Marine, which accelerates self-regeneration for youthful looking, firm, and radiant skin. Also developed with this line is the new treatment program called Renovation Radical. A series of 4 professional cosmetic treatments which have been dermatologist tested with 100% satisfaction in improved skin quality, reduced imperfections, and refined skin texture, resulting in a clear and radiant complexion.

The MCeutic line targets:

  • loss of radiance
  • uneven skin tone
  • rough micro surface
  • thick skin texture
  • dilated pores
  • localized imperfections
  • residual marks from past acne

One thing is for sure, 2016 will be an exciting year for skincare!

What Every Esthetician Wants for Christmas

‘Tis the season to create holiday gift giving lists. Deciding who to buy for is actually sometimes harder than finding them a gift. When you are making you r list, you probably start with those closest to you and then broaden it to include service providers like your hairdresser, nail techs and esthetician. These are the people that you might see so often that sometimes you’d swear they actually are family. So what do you get for these people who have taken such good care of you all year long? Gift cards are often the choice, but it’s been done before. Same goes for candles, lotions and chocolates so you can just put those back on the shelf.

We’ve got the perfect gift for your esthetician that is easy to find and won’t break the bank. It’s a promise from you to finally invest in the skin care products she’s been asking you to use at home since the day you met her. Before you roll your eyes, think about it. She’s been after you to choose better skin care products every time you have seen her. Why? Because she cares. She wants you to feel good about your skin every time you look in the mirror. And you and your skin are a walking business card for her.  How you look is a direct reflection of her work and the more people notice you, the more opportunity she has for obtaining new business.

Your skin is a window to your true age and can be a secret keeper for you if you take proper care of it in between facials. The investment may seem daunting at first, but remember investing in YOU is always worth it and the products you have been buying at the drugstore just don’t have what your skin needs anyhow. To make the leap a little less scary here’s a list of products your esthetician wants you to use every day:

1)  A good cleanser – choose one that’s right for your skin type. There are cleansers for acne-prone skin as well as normal to dry. Talk with your esthetician about one for you. And remember you only need to cleanse at night (this is when your skin is in self-repair mode). The oils you naturally produce overnight will help to protect your skin all day long.

2)  An Antioxidant – Remember what your Mom used to say? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Antioxidants shield your skin from damage caused by environmental hazards and helps correct the damage your skin has already sustained by free radicals. This is the most expensive piece of the skin care puzzle but quite possibly, the most important.

3)  Moisturizer- Not all moisturizers are the same. Ask your esthetician to help choose one that suits your age. If you are 30, use one for your age range, and ditto if you are in your 50s, etc. It’s important to use a cream that’s suitable for your age and also the season. If your climate changes with the seasons you may have to alter your moisturizer to to ramp up for colder, harsher weather.

4)  Eye Cream – We all need eye cream.  The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body and, therefore, needs an “eye-specific” cream to be treated properly.  Whether you want to prevent fine lines and wrinkles or if you are looking to correct them, we need to use it twice a day without fail.

5) SPF – Whether you are 25 or 75, you need to use a SPF product to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays that are present even when it’s cloudy. These rays prematurely age the skin and are the most common cause of skin cancer.

That’s it. 5 products that will change the way that you age, protect your skin from the environment and prolong the positive results of all those facials you have been getting. Yes, it’s an investment but it will save you money on corrective skin care in the future.

If you make the plunge and begin the skin care regimen she’s been urging you try, it will be a gift far more meaningful to her than anything else you can imagine. And her boss will be thrilled with her retail sales too!

Thalgo, MCeutic

2015 brought many new skin care trends and nuances but one area that became more popular this year was new skin care apps.  Thanks to technology, anyone with a smart phone can now download their favorite skin care app, create a profile, upload a pic, and poof, the app will provide suggestions for your skin care regimen. Cool? Yes. Accurate? We aren’t so sure. So many variables can infringe upon getting an accurate analysis here such as quality of the picture, quality of the smartphone camera, lighting, etc.  But all in all it’s a fun way to begin the education process for those new to skin care.

For those not so new and looking for more serious skin care, devices continued making a splash this year in the industry. Personal skin care devices utilizing sound frequencies and cleansing brushes for example, became popular in 2010 and are still being upgraded and re-introduced today. They promise a gentle cleansing with the ability to rid the face of topical dirt, freeing clogged pores and thus treating acne and skin congestion. The downside of these handhelds exfoliators:  they can be rough if used too frequently ultimately thinning the skin.

A popular device used in spas is micro current. Proven to improve fine lines and wrinkles and stimulate facial muscles, micro current is still a hip and effective way to combat aging and improve skin elasticity. Home use devices are trending but don’t deliver the same level of current and require more patience for noticeable improvement. Our take: stick with the pro’s. You will spend less time and get better results working with a spa.

Thalgo offers a technological treatment which also includes micro current called IBeauty.

This device combines 3 innovative technologies:

  • Sound Vibrations for an in-depth cleanse and exfoliation.
  • Sequential Ultrasound for skin detoxification, reactivation of cell metabolism and infusion of the active ingredients used during the treatment.
  • Radio Frequency which heats the skin tissue while delivering micro current to regenerate, plump and firm the skin

IBeauty was launched in early 2015 and has been a great success this for Thalgo year.

Red light therapy is no longer new in the device department but still very popular for its ability to stimulate collagen production and treat acne.  According to The Dermatology Review, “Red light therapy in dermatology was investigated as doctors noticed an increasing amount of patients who were immune to the normal antibiotic treatments used to get rid of acne.” While the use of red light therapy has become popular by dermatologists and spas, the jury is out as to whether at-home devices emit enough light to be effective. Our opinion: it’s best to let the professionals deliver this therapy.

While there’s no crystal ball to predict the exact skin care trends, devices, apps or products that will resonate with buyers in the coming year, one thing is for sure: new skin care products are always exciting. Thalgo recently introduced a new medically-inspired product range called MCeutic

The MCeutic line targets:

  • loss of radiance
  • uneven skin tone
  • rough micro surface
  • thick skin texture
  • dilated pores
  • localized imperfections
  • residual marks from past acne

This revolutionary Medi-cosmetic line featured in Spa Business, uses patented product Mesolift Marine, which accelerates self-regeneration for youthful looking, firm, radiant skin. Also developed with this line is the new treatment program called Renovation Radical. A series of 4 professional cosmetic treatments which have been dermatologist tested with 100% satisfaction in improved skin quality, reduced imperfections, refined skin texture, resulting in a clear and radiant complexion. A radical renovation in skin care indeed.

Evidence and history point to 2016 being a great year for more renovations in skin care and the spa industry in general. According to SkinInc magazine, “professionals are starting to feel the freedom and security afforded by a more stable economy, resulting in an exciting time in the spa industry.” This growth and excitement looks to be continuing which should make 2016 an thrilling year for new trends in skin care and the spa industry.

How Millennials View Skin Care

Nov 30, 2015 8:55:29 PM

Millennials and SKin Care

According to millenialmarketing.com, millennials are those individuals born between 1977 and 2000. They make up a staggering 25% of the U.S. population, and are responsible for 21% of ALL consumer discretionary purchases. WOW. With that kind of influence and buying power, the beauty industry has found it necessary to sit up, take notice, and begin major marketing toward Gen Y’s.  But before they can do this successfully, they need to decide what will attract them and how to attract them quickly.

According to the Market Research Blog; “Millennials are establishing beauty and skincare habits and consumer patterns that are likely to persist throughout their lifetime. So, the companies and brands that win Gen Y consumers are likely to retain these consumers for the long term.” Skin care companies must market to millennials as heavily as they market anti-aging to older women because establishing brand trust early will pay off when millennials are ready for anti-aging, products which carry so much of modern skin care lines.

According to Women’s Marketing.com, 1 quarter of all millennials will make skincare decisions based on what they have read online. Any skincare company with a weak online presence will miss out on a plethora of opportunities here.  And Gen Y’s are not the only one’s looking online for skin care advice and product knowledge, many individuals 55 and over are searching online for skin care and taking special note of reviews. So again, an online presence, is no longer just a luxury, it’s a necessity. Still, skin care companies today need to think like millennials,  target them with an honest approach and if possible, an approach with a cause other than their skin. Millennials love supporting brands with an underlying cause for the greater good.

Thalgo’s approach to skin care is now and always has been overall wellness with the recognition that proper skincare begins from the inside out. And since the first cells originated from the ocean, this is where they began creating their brand.

Created from the sea, Thalgo has a duty to minimize its ecological footprint. Thalgo’s commitment to Nature is at the very core of the brand's DNA and guides all stages of our developments for Safe Beauty and a more beautiful nature.  Visit Thalgo, to find out more about this algae-based skin care line. Carrying products ranging from nutritional and weight loss supplements, to skin care, Thalgo that has something for every generation and every aspect of wellness.
