The Sea and Us
THALGO is inspired by thalassotherapy, spa treatments that use real seawater and seaweed to effectively treat a range of conditions from skin problems, such as eczema, to excess weight, low energy levels and fluid retention.
We all know how beneficial the sea is for health and well-being. THALGO has been able to harness these extraordinary benefits in its range of spa treatments and skincare products. For more than 50 years, THALGO has explored the sea depths and identified specific seaweeds with anti-aging, slimming, detoxifying, rebalancing, hydrating and soothing properties.
Our patented Micronized Marine Algae (MMA) provides outstanding results in the medical treatment of conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis and skin disorders. Due to a unique manufacturing process, the cell walls of the marine algae are literally exploded to release the active inner ingredients. The micro-particles of the resulting powder ensure remarkable skin penetration.
The sea is where life on our planet began. Three billion years ago the first living cells were single cell blue algae. When you analyze seawater under a microscope, you can see it has a very similar structure to blood plasma. The human body is made up of approximately 70% water. The sea makes up 3/4 of the earth’s surface. Algae are responsible for 1/3 of the world’s oxygen production.
“Sea washes away all of man’s ills.”

Doctor de La Bonnardière, a doctor from Arcachon, France, invented the word Thalassotherapy in 1867 from two Greek words meaning “treat with the sea” (in Greek, thalassa = sea and therapeia = treatment).
Thalassotherapy takes place in a special marine site. It combines the use of all the benefits of the marine environment under medical supervision with a preventive and curative aim. These benefits include the marine climate, seawater, marine mud, algae, sand and other substances extracted from the sea. Thalassotherapy must be carried out in close proximity to the sea.
The curative properties of seawater and the marine climate have been used for therapeutic means since ancient times. Today’s Marine Treatments are a true asset for our well-being.
- In 1822, the first “seawater hot baths” open in Dieppe.
- In 1899, a Thalassotherapy institute opens its doors in Roscoff (Brittany, France).
- In 1904, René Quinton lays the scientific foundations of seawater therapy.
- In 1964, Louison Bobet opens the first modern Thalassotherapy Centre.
- In 1966, the patent for Micro-Exploded Algae is registered by pharmacist A. Bouclet
In France, 1 out of 5 centers has chosen THALGO as its partner brand.
Algae have the amazing ability to increase the rich content of minerals and trace elements of the sea and restore its strengthening, remineralizing and balancing properties, sometimes by up to 100,000 times. The star of treatments, algae act like sponges in Thalassotherapy to give you the best that seawater has to offer.
They have a very high concentration of mineral elements (iodine, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc, cobalt, iron, fluoride, etc.) and also contain almost every vitamin and amino acid. Thanks to this particularly rich composition, algae boast antiviral as well as antibacterial qualities. They are used to heal rheumatism and regulate the thyroid gland.
While the most common use is in algae body wraps, in which the body is entirely covered with hot algae before being wrapped in a hot blanket, algae can also be used in a bath or even find their way onto your plate. The muscles relax, blood circulation is reactivated and toxins are eliminated.
Built up at the bottom of the bays over a surface area of several millimeters, natural earth and marine elements mix together and deposit sediment to form a marine silt. Its rich sulfide content gives marine mud an easily recognizable acidic odor.
Marine mud has real ionic concentrations due to marine fauna and flora. It is renowned for its analgesic power against rheumatism, except in the case of severe outbreaks, and for certain skin conditions.
Used in cataplasms or directly on the body and mixed with seawater, marine mud traps toxins and gently purifies the body. Dosed at 2 kilos of mud per 500 liters of seawater, it acts physiologically with its plasticity and power to retain water and heat, and chemically, via the movement of certain of its trace elements through the skin.
To be effective, the body wrap must last around 25 minutes. While you relax, the skin absorbs the components present in the mud and the effect of the heat removes toxins, which asphyxiate the body, through the pores of the epidermis. Recharged with vitamins, the body is freed of its impurities and the skin becomes softer.
